Mike Woolfolk Biography

Mike Woolfolk, an award-winning broadcast journalist with more than 25 years of experience, is a news anchor and reporter for WEYI-TV (NBC 25) and WSMH-TV (FOX 66) in Flint, Michigan.

Mike co-anchors NBC 25 Today weekday mornings from 5:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m. Prior to joining WEYI/WSMH, Mike worked at WXYZ-TV in Detroit, Michigan as a general assignment and breaking news reporter for 7 Action News.

Mike is a Michigan native who graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcasting from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Mike’s professional television career began while he was still in school at Southern. He began working for WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge as a weekend news producer and assignment editor in 1987.

He later added responsibilities as a sports reporter and anchor followed by a news reporter and substitute anchor before leaving the station in 1989.

From Baton Rouge, Mike moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he worked as a weekend sports anchor and reporter for KVBC-TV. From 1989 to 1991, he covered a variety of sports stories including the NCAA Basketball Championships and major boxing matches involving Mike Tyson, Buster Douglas, Evander Holyfield, Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Pernell Whitaker, Roberto Duran, and others.

In 1991, Mike moved to Jackson, Mississippi where he began working as a weekday sports anchor for Mississippi News Tonight, but later returned to the news department as an anchor and reporter.

When Mississippi News Tonight ended, Mike remained in Jackson to work for WAPT-TV where he co-anchored the morning newscast and later the 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM newscasts.

In 1994, Mike received the Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters Association award for best public affairs program for a special he produced on addressing problems in secondary education.

Mike moved to Columbia, South Carolina in January 1996 where he helped launch WACH FOX News at Ten. He spent 14 years as a member of the WACH FOX news team and left the station in March 2010 as the longest-tenured evening news anchor in Columbia.

During his time with WACH-TV, Mike helped build the ratings to the point where WACH FOX News at Ten, was among the highest-rated prime-time newscasts in the country. WACH FOX News at Ten also earned recognition from the South Carolina Associated Press Broadcasters Association as Columbia’s best newscast for 2007-2008.

Mike is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists. He has served the organization in several capacities including Vice President – Broadcast, Regional Director, Convention Chairman, Elections Chairman, Salute to Excellence Awards Chairman, and Council of Presidents Chairman.

Mike has also served as an instructor and speaker at the NABJ Broadcast Short Course, held annually at North Carolina A&T State University, and remains committed to programs aimed at producing the next generation of journalists.

In 2007, Mike was inducted into the NABJ Region III Hall of Fame in recognition of meritorious service to the organization and nearly two decades of journalism work in the Southeast region of the country.
